Girl Scout Troop aims to send 500 boxes of cookies to Afghanistan in honor of fallen soldier, Alex Viola.

Girl Scout Troop 3189, based out of Lorton, VA, hopes to send 500 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies overseas to troops in Afghanistan, in memory of a recently fallen soldier, Alex Viola, a family friend of one of the girl scouts.

Staff Sgt. Viola, 29, was killed in November, 2013, by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. It was his first deployment as special forces.  He was assigned to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

Girl Scouts from Troop 3189 are collecting donations towards postage to mail the cookies overseas in addition to donations of cookies to the soldiers.  The cookies will be sent directly to his Battalion, still stationed overseas.  Girls from Troop 3189 are ages 9-10 and attend Laurel Hill Elementary and Lorton Station Elementary schools.

"Not only are we teaching the girls about compassion and giving, we are doing something in honor of Alex that will help boost the spirits of those still serving overseas" said one of the Troop's leaders.
